I feel the same acidic drip in my stomach prior to each climb. It's my first obstacle. The mountain isn't my adversary, I am. I'm my own worst enemy. The mountain is only a catalyst that starts the conflict within me. There is no more formidable opponent than my own doubt. Sometimes I bury it within me, other times I take it out on the route. But it's always there. At times butterflies in my belly are so big I think I'm going to lift off the ground.

Why climb?
Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer. Camp out among the grasses and gentians of glacial meadows, in craggy garden nooks full of nature's darlings. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings, Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is closed, but nature's sources never fail.
When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.
